What is National Citizen Service?

What is National Citizen Service?

Aimed at those in Year 11, National Citizen Service is an exciting chance to do something different during the summer holiday. The government programme has been championed by Prime Minister David Cameron to encourage teenagers to learn new skills and volunteer in their communities.

Taking part will result in young people:

  • learning some new skills
  • meeting new people
  • making a real difference to the community or an issue they care about

National Citizen Service will take place during the summer at the end of Year 11. It will run for three weeks full-time, including two weeks away from home. After that, participants need to complete another 30 hours on a part-time basis.

Working in a team, young people will have the chance to take part in exciting outdoor activities like mountaineering, canoeing and abseiling.

Participants also get the opportunity to design and deliver their own project in their local community. This could mean working with other young people to improve the area where they live, benefiting everyone who lives there.

Where is National Citizen Service happening?

National Citizen Service will take place across England and will be run by 12 different organisations. There will be around 11,000 places available when the scheme starts in summer 2011. There will be more places in future years.
